Join us as we welcome Liz Fraser, Legal Counsel at Sherritt International Corporation, one of the world’s largest producers of nickel from lateritic sources with operations in Canada, Cuba and Madagascar. Liz will discuss the challenges and rewards of working in Madagascar, as well as her experience as in-house counsel and in private practice.

Liz is a corporate lawyer at Sherritt International Corporation, a TSX-listed mining company with operations in Canada, Cuba and Madagascar. Liz spent the first four years of her career as an associate in Fraser Milner Casgrain’s (now Dentons LLP) in Mining Group, where she practiced general corporate and commercial and securities law and provided services to publicly listed companies in a wide variety of areas, including securities offerings, mergers and acquisitions, share and asset purchase transactions.
Liz joined Sherritt at its head office in Toronto in 2011, moving to the Ambatovy Joint Venture, a $7.2 billion mining joint venture with Sumitomo Corporation and KORES in Madagascar, in 2012. While at Ambatovy, she assumed responsibility for the legal affairs of the joint venture during a nine month leave of absence of the Legal Director, which included negotiating the issuance of the joint venture’s operating permit and royalties agreement with the Malagasy government and advising management on a variety of legal matters.
During the remainder of her time in Madagascar, Liz assisted the Legal Director in advising management and the joint venture partners on the interpretation of governing agreements and applicable legislation, ensuring compliance with corporate governance requirements, as well as being responsible for the roll-out and implementation of Ambatovy’s anti-corruption policy, amongst other things.Liz returned to Sherritt’s head office in September 2014 in her current role.
In her spare time, Liz enjoys travelling, hiking and long-distance running, as well as learning Spanish and Portuguese.
