OUR SPEAKER:

Sybil Veemman, Former General Counsel Barrick Gold Corporation

Topic: The Mining Industry Grows Up:  Observations on the Evolution of the Mining Industry over the Past 20 Years

Over her more than 20 years working in the mining industry, Sybil has seen significant change in the nature of the challenges that the industry faces and in how the industry has responded to those challenges. Sybil will offer her observations on those changes and outline what she believes are some key lessons learned.

Sybil Veenman was the General Counsel, and a member of the Senior Leadership Team, of Barrick Gold Corporation.  Barrick is the world’s largest gold mining company, with a portfolio of operating mines and advanced exploration and development projects located across five continents.  During her time at Barrick, Sybil played a key role in developing the global legal function and supporting Barrick’s financing activities and transactions, including the acquisition of Equinox Minerals in 2011, Placer Dome in 2006, and Homestake Mining in 2002. As Barrick expanded internationally, she played a leadership role in the development and implementation global compliance programs, including Code of Business Conduct and Ethics, Anti-Corruption, and Human Rights policies and programs.   Prior to joining Barrick, she was with Lac Minerals Ltd., and was in private practice for a number of years. She is a graduate of the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1989.
